TORY INÈS DEAKIN

Tory Inès Deakin is the founder of Tory Inès Interior, an interior stylist and designer known for creating spaces that feel both beautifully refined and deeply lived in. Based in Western Australia and mother to two young children, Tory's work is guided by a love of craftsmanship, timeless design and the belief that homes should evolve alongside the lives lived within them.

In this conversation, Tory shares how motherhood has shaped her perspective on design, the simple rituals that keep her grounded, and why creating a home that embraces both beauty and imperfection has become more important than ever. From her favourite family spots to her advice for other creative mothers, this is an honest and inspiring glimpse into the woman behind the spaces.

What inspired you to start your interior styling and design business?

I've been drawn to design since I was a kid. Always loving fabrics, furniture and the way a room was styled. I distinctly remember circling furniture items that I loved in catalogues when they would arrive in the mail or tearing out pages of my Mum's Côte Sud magazines. I think I'd always dreamt of creating beautiful and uplifting spaces which make you feel good.

Where do you draw inspiration from….both creatively and personally?

Travelling is a huge source of inspiration. Being surrounded by beautiful buildings with deep history, many of which have intricate details with traditional craftsmanship, is always inspiring. As well as my mum!

How would you describe your design philosophy or aesthetic?

I love creating spaces which feel both relaxed and refined. A large part is also about being in a space that is inviting and designed to be lived in.

Has becoming a mother influenced your design work?

I think that element of your home feeling "lived in" really amplifies; suddenly your home is full of so much life. I've always been drawn to this concept that the things in your home should show life, patina, break, and be mended - but it has definitely grown since becoming a mum.

What’s your “mum hack” when it comes to keeping a stylish, functional home with kids?

A more recent hack of mine was purchasing a stylish throw that can be pulled over any furniture item. I found a beautiful Belgian heavy linen throw in a deep forest green that protects my upholstered pieces while adding another textured element to my space. It also becomes a cute cubby house or picnic rug from time to time.

What advice would you give to other mums looking to start their own creative business?

Just start slowly in whatever capacity you can.

Where do you like to escape with your family that helps you reset and reconnect?

The ocean - it instantly resets us all

What does success look like to you right now?

I feel most successful when I've been able to spend quality time with our kids with emotional presence but also find pockets of time to feel creative for myself.

Are there any routines, or habits that keep you grounded and productive?

Slow mornings. I love opening all the windows and doors, lighting my favourite incense and putting on music. Whether with the family or alone it both energises and calms me.

Are there any dream projects or goals you're working towards?

Definitely. After having some time off after the birth of our son, I'm looking forward to travelling next year and re-igniting my love of sourcing objects and styling pieces.
