How to create an enchanting unicorn party full of magic

They are sparkly, majestic, and magical. To children, unicorns symbolise wonder and dreamy otherworldly things. To parents, they are unavoidable eyesores in their carefully curated homes. So, what does one do when their indoctrinated 3-year-old requests (read: demands) a unicorn party?

Thankfully, there’s a tasteful way to celebrate. Our resident decorating north star Tanya Levak shared her own Waldorf rendition of a unicorn theme, with hand-crafted whimsical adornments and rituals aplenty.

What was your inspiration?

I wanted to put a whimsical spin on the rainbow-hued cartoon character we imagine when we think of a unicorn. So I did a deep dive into its roots and I landed on the mystical medieval tapestries and paintings of unicorns. From this, I weaved in otherworldly elements like stars, glitter, the natural world, textures and subdued colours. The plan was to have the party outside at twilight under our jacaranda tree lit up by hanging candles and tea-lights beside the fire-pit. However, the day was subject to torrential rain that did not stop. So we brought it inside and decorated the table, walls, fireplace and windows to give it a cosy feel.

Tell us about the cake.

My love for nostalgic elements of the old world brought me to the idea that unicorns could be also mistaken for horses on a carousel. So I made a carousel cake in pastel pink with the cutest magical horses on striped polls that I scored from Etsy.

What decorations did you make for the day?

For this theme, I created soft rainbow stars by having my daughter paint sheets of watercolour paintings and then I traced out stars in different sizes. I did this as I like to have the child whose birthday it is also create and be a part of the process. It gets them excited in the lead-up to the special day. I also tried my hand at papier-mâché for the moon faces and dragonflies, then I painted them in metallics and pastels. To hang these up, I used scraps of linen from my fabric box. I reused my spray-painted suns from a previous party to have that solstice vibe as my daughter's birthday is so close to solstice so I always like to add a hint of that.

How did you dress the table?

I wanted to link in the mystical and solstice elements so I incorporated a log branch from a tree recently cut down and glue-gunned candles on top. I weaved some old man's beard I had gathered from a nearby park and found some faux tea-lights on Amazon. My kid's wooden toys like the unicorn, frogs, and dolphins were placed around the log and I finished it with some velvet faux mushrooms, dried autumn leaves, and tinsel strings along with paper daisies.

Any other details you want to mention?

I love to incorporate nature into all of my parties. Foraging for elements of the decor in and around where we live is a central element of all of my decorating for the children's parties. It's also a fun and easy way to include the kids in the events as they love collecting things from parks and our walks so it's a simple extension of that.
